5 Prayers to Fuel Intimacy with Jesus

“If you find my beloved, tell Him that I am lovesick” Song of Solomon 5:8

“Lovesick” isn’t a word that I use in my day-to-day life, but it is a word that describes the heart of love that Jesus wants to produce in His bride before He returns. Jesus isn’t returning for a bride who is disinterested in Him or distracted by other lovers. He wants a bride who is lovesick. When I think of being “lovesick” I think of having a heart that longs for Jesus more than anything else.

I’m convinced this is how the Lord wants us to live now, before the wedding of the Lamb. Recently, as I was reading Song of Solomon, I noticed in the first chapter there are several prayers of adoration the maiden prays. By the second chapter, she declares that she is lovesick (Song 2:5). There is an obvious progression from where she is longing for love to the place where she is completely undone or lovesick.

I want to highlight several of these prayers and encourage you to pray them regularly. Your heart will begin to come alive in love, to a place of being lovesick for Jesus.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—For your love is better than wine. 3 Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you. 4 Draw me away! We will run after you. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will remember your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you. 5 I am dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, Like the tents of Kedar, Like the curtains of Solomon. Song of Solomon 1:2-5

1. Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His word (vs. 2)

The kisses of His mouth speak of the revelation of His word. The kiss of revelation is what Paul prayed in Ephesians 1: “That God may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him”. This is the key to falling deeply in love with Jesus - Revelation of Him from the word of God. Ask Him today to release revelation to your heart in the knowledge of Him.

2. Your love is better than wine (vs. 3)

Coming to believe that the love of God is the greatest treasure in this life is essential for the bride. We must recognize that no worldly pleasure (i.e. wine) can compare to knowing and experiencing the love of God. Speak these words to Him in prayer, “Your love is better than anything this world can offer. Cause my heart to know this and feel this today.”

3. Your name is like purified oil, oil poured forth (vs. 3)

The ancients used fragrant oil as perfume. The name of the Lord speaks of the nature and glory of the Lord (Exodus 33:19). When He manifests His glory, His nature fills our lives like strong perfume fills a room. Pray that He would pour forth of His nature and glory upon you, that you would be overwhelmed by His glory.

4. Draw me away, let us run together (vs. 4)

God created us firstly for love. We are woven together by the One who is love to respond to His love above everything else. Asking Him to draw you into love is a powerful way to experience His affections. From that place of love we get to run with Him. It’s important to note that we don’t do things for God, rather we get to run with Him. He wants to draw you into His affections that you can then run with Him in all He desires.

5. I am dark but lovely (vs. 5)

This is the most foundational revelation of the love of God. Though we are broken and riddled with imperfection, God loves us extravagantly. Though we may be exceedingly weak, He says we are beautiful. Our flaws don’t offend Him. Our imperfections don’t throw Him off. Though we are unworthy, He still adores us. Pray these words aloud today, “Lord though I am completely broken and unworthy, You still love me. Though I’m bound by imperfection, You say I’m beautiful. Cause this truth go deep into my heart.”

I hope these prayers from Song of Solomon become a helpful tool for you to use as you seek the Lord’s heart. I want to encourage you today to lean into His affections and allow His great love to call you into being lovesick.
