You Were Made for Wonder

Every human heart has been constructed with the same mystical framework – We all share an insatiable appetite for wonder. We love to be wowed. We love to be awed. Beauty enthralls us. Mystery captivates us. We continuously want thrill and shock. We are moved by a hardwired code in our hearts that demands amazement. All of this is divine design. It’s Heaven’s fashioning manifest in our being. 

This gaping desire for fire and grandeur in our souls testifies of our purpose: to live forever fascinated by the Creator of beauty and glory. This is what our hearts ultimately long for, to continuously feast on the wonder and majesty of God. 

Pause for a moment and let this truth settle upon your mind: God, who is all wonder, all glory, all beauty, and all majesty, made you for Himself. He who is utmost in splendor and magnificence constructed you with an unquenchable longing to drink in the phenomenon of Him. 

So many believers live bored in this life because they misappropriate their longings for wonder toward temporal things - entertainment, sports, people, or money. We all want transcendence. Transcendence simply means something that is wholly different from everything else. God is the only one who possesses transcendence. He not only possesses it, He invites us to experience it. There is none like Him and He is right now inviting you into the whirlwind of His glory. This is what you were made for. 

The scriptures are our onramp into the divine. When we meditate on the truths of the word, the Holy Spirit escorts us into places of holy encounter that thrills our hearts like nothing else. I love to read a passage and then put myself in the midst of the passage imagining every detail and allowing the Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind, coloring in the details with heaven’s perspective. 

There are many passages geared to escort us into wonder. Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6 show us Jesus in the glory He shared with the Father before He was came in the flesh. John 1 describes the wonder of the pre-existent One entering His own creation, clothing Himself in our frailty. Revelation 1 gives us a glimpse of Jesus in His resurrected and glorified state. Revelation 19 shows us Jesus in fire and power on the day of His return.

I want to encourage you during this holiday season to take some extended time to unplug and consider freshly the wonder of God. Read through the passages that I’ve mentioned here and put yourself into the narrative. Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten your eyes with revelation. Be patient and allow Him to bring the escort. You will find your soul ablaze with His presence and filled with Holy awe!
