5 Ways to Meditate on the Glory of the Lord

In Psalm 145:5, David declared, “I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works.” Paul followed up David by instructing us to, “seek those things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on the earth.”(Col 3:1-2). Whoever came up with the idea that a person could be too heavenly minded to be any earthly good must have overlooked these passages!

The word meditate literally means to muse, ponder, speak and sing. So if we’re going to follow David’s example, thinking, speaking, and singing of the Lord’s glorious splendor and majesty should be a normal part of our lives.

Meditating on the glory of the Lord starts with meditating on the Word. I love to read passages and picture every detail, speaking them quietly to God, and at times singing them to Him. Here are 5 ways to set your mind to think, speak, and sing of His glory:

1) The Glory of the Throne Room (Revelation 4 & 5) – Revelation 4-5 gives us the most extensive glimpse of the throne room of God. I like to read through these two chapters together and begin to picture each detail mentioned. Remember, when we come to God we actually come to His throne room. We have access to Him by the blood of Jesus. Read these passages, picture every detail and begin to worship the Lord, seeing yourself as one of the vast company of saints and angels in the throne room.

2) The Indwelling Glory (Col 1:27, John 14:23) – The Scripture is clear, because of the New Birth, believers have God’s glory dwelling within us through the person of the Holy Spirit. The church is corporately and individually temples for the Lord’s glory. Close your eyes and consider that in your spirit, right now, the very glory of God is dwelling within you. There is a fire inside you that is ferocious and unquenchable. The Holy Spirit dwells inside you! Meditate on that truth and let it move your heart.

3) The Glory of Jesus (Revelation 1 & Ezekiel 1) – These two passages give us a glimpse of Jesus in His glorified state. I love to recount the details aloud, considering every facet of Him – eyes of fire, head and hair white as wool/snow, face shining like the sun, golden band around his chest, garment down to the feet, feet glowing like bronze in a furnace, voice like many waters, walking amidst the lampstands, holding seven stars – He is ALL GLORIOUS!!

4) The Glory of the Word (Col 3:16, John 15:7) – Jesus is the image of the glory of God and Jesus is the word made flesh. Therefore when we meditate on the Word, we access the glory of God. I like to take a passage and slowly say it over and over, considering every detail. After a while the passage will lodge in my memory. I will continue to consider it until details I had not considered begin to be illuminated to my mind. That illumination is the spirit of revelation, the Holy Spirit, revealing the glory of the Word to us.

5) The Glory of His Presence (Acts 2:2-4, Exodus 19:16-20) David instructed us to seek God’s presence continually in 1 Chron 16:11. I love to experience the presence of God through worship, prayer, and meditation on the Word. The passages that speak of God’s presence poured out on His people always escort me into His presence. Consider the outpouring at Pentecost, The glory on Mount Sinai, The fire at the dedication of Solomon’s temple and passages similar to these. Meditating on how God pours His presence out causes His presence to manifest upon us.

I pray these are helpful tools for you to use in your own devotional time with the Lord. Great grace to you as you pursue Him today!
